Earl Folks Sr.

Local Business Owner and Community Hero After working for about a decade in a steel factory downriver, Earl became the primary manager of operations at Rollercade Roller Rink in 1989. Earl had always been a vital part of the Rollercade. It opened in 1955 when he was just 5 years old and will celebrate 58 years at a big skating celebration on October 19th. The rink was owned by his parents Johnnie Mae and Leroy Folks. Earl and his seven siblings practically and literally grew up on roller skates.

Mastering many fancy skate moves, also known to some Detroit skaters as 'hops', Earl has been a part of skate clubs including the Rollercade Rockers and national organizations like the RSROA, Roller Skating Rink Owners Association. He has been an overseer of roller skate competitions like the Rollercade King and Queen Contests, The Coca-Cola Skate Contests sponsored by the RSROA in the 1980s and more.

Earl has skated and performed at various roller rinks across the county. Earl has taught countless numbers of children in the tri-city area (River Rouge, Ecorse, and Southwest Detroit ) how to roller skate. From basic moves to fancy steps, many skaters got their start and skate swag at the Rollercade.

Literally, generations have undergone his tutelage via his Saturday afternoon class and the Tri-City Skate Club. The Master Roller Skater continues to roller skate for exercise and teaches children on Saturdays. He is a living legend in the roller skating world. Not only is Earl known for roller skating, he is also beloved in the community because he provides a source of recreation in the community and is one of very few black business owners in the area.

Declining lucrative offers to sell the building, Earl opted to keep the pearl of the community open for business so the local children would have something to do, somewhere to go to have fun while their parents get a break. Not to mention a place for children to engage in an activity that will keep them physically fit and teach a skill set.

Earl recently passed the torch to his nephew Kyle, who now manages the rink, so that he can finally take it easy and enjoy semi-retired life. Earl has three adult children, five grandchildren, a great granddaughter on the way, and a grand dog. Mr. Folks still roller skates and pops up at the rink to teach and skate for leisure and exercise.

Minister LaToya Warren

Minister LaToya is literally ‘A Lady Living for the Lord.’ There is not a more fitting description of this woman. It is namesake of her ministry: Ladies Living for the Lord, also dubbed L to the third power (L3). Looking at her today, you would never imagine that Minister LaToya was once a reluctant warrior. Her level of respect for the office of minister is so sacred to her, she wanted to be sure that she could fill those shoes and walk worthy of the calling.

After a period of contemplating and praying, Minister LaToya gracefully walked into her calling with full force of the Holy Spirit backing her. God’s presence in her walk is evidenced by the doors He has opened for her in ministry, both locally and abroad. Minister LaToya goes forth with fervor and authority. Her calling is undeniable. The former River Rouge High School (MI) cheerleader now applies that enthusiasm and zeal to the Gospel message of Christ and setting women free from all that holds them back. Minister LaToya is like a quiet storm.

The youngest child of a large family, her demeanor is peaceful and humble. But when the spirit takes over, watch out! A transformation occurs. The quiet lady turns into a preaching powerhouse wielding God’s Word like a mighty sword! Minister LaToya speaks with a confidence and authority that the enemy has no choice but be subdued by. It must be the same unassuming ability to command that has made her an effective Wayne County Sheriff for more than 20 years.

Carrying her badge and her Bible, this gracious minister does not mind being hidden. She goes into seclusion for stints while she recharges in prayer and waits to receive new marching orders from on high. Minister LaToya is a prayer warrior, intercessor, preacher and teacher. She comes from a family of faith and has always been surrounded by ministry. She has been nurtured by some of the finest pastors and leaders who have graciously poured into her and have acknowledged her gifts and calling.

Additionally, Minister LaToya is a highly creative and entrepreneurial visionary. She channeled some of her creativity into a very successful event planning and catering business called The Finest Affair. She operates her business ventures with high standards of excellence and professionalism just like she does in ministry. Her feminine style heart for strengthening women is apparent through her inspirational T-Shirt line, books and journals. All of her work is connected to her ministry. Minister LaToya is most proud to be the mother of beautiful, intelligent and successful daughters. She counts it a blessing and privilege to provide tutelage, guidance and support for her young ladies who are destined to be leaders of tomorrow and also Ladies Living for the Lord.

Minister LaToya has and continues to attain many great accomplishments, both professionally and personally. She is a Lady Living for the Lord who takes John 14:12 very personally as she continues to do ‘Greater Works.'

Brent Jackson

Receiving an encouraging letter from someone on the outside could make the difference between life and death (for an inmate).” ~ Brent Jackson

If there was ever a prime example of an incarcerated person being successfully rehabilitated, Brent Jackson is it! As evidenced by his present success, Brent demonstrates that no matter how dismal the circumstances are, a positive outcome can be achieved! A life can be turned around, and it is Brent’s mission to help make this attainable for as many people as possible. Born into what can be described as a crime school environment, Mr. Jackson’s surroundings and circumstances led him to a life and lifestyle that he would not have chosen on his own.

Growing up black and male in Detroit, MI, where drugs permeated through the streets, it had become commonplace to be lured into objectionable activities as a means of survival. Consequently, Brent morphed into someone he never meant to become. Experimenting with drug use, among other things, led to some bad decisions, including some criminal activity. This path led to 9 years of incarceration in the State of Michigan prison system.

Early in Brent’s life, even in the midst of challenges he faced, there were always certain people placed in his life with angelic presence and positive influence. These people recognized gifts in Brent that he didn’t even see himself, like the middle school counselor who encouraged him to become a part of the Glee Club! To his amazement, Brent enjoyed being involved in this group and it left an imprint that continues to influence him.  Positive seeds were sown into Brent’s life by various people. Another that was pivotal, was a good friend in prison who persistently invited Brent to church.

Finally, Brent acquiesced and attended a service. Brent got saved that day and never turned back. His passion for Christ continues to grow daily and the manifestation of God’s presence in his life is undeniable. Brent’s life is a story that clearly exhibits the redemptive power of a loving God if you allow Him to work in your life. All too familiar is the pain of feeling the stigma associated with being an ex-convict. Bent has gotten the fearful and skeptical stares, the employment rejections, and all that comes with trying to thrive with a criminal history.

Nonetheless, he has overcome those things. Successful studies at H.I.S. Bridge Builders, El Centro Continuing Education, and Collin College prepared Brent to consistently maintain gainful employment. Brent has excelled on the job in various roles in Sales, Management and technical fields. Now Brent is flexing his entrepreneurial muscle with his most recent endeavor as Founder of D.Y.M.O.N.D Sentiments.

The Mission of D.Y.M.O.N.D Sentiments is: “To encourage strong connections between the incarcerated and those who care about them by providing inspirational greeting cards written with their situations in mind.” A Deacon in training at the Potter’s House Church in North Frisco, pastored by Cheryl Brady under the leadership of Bishop T. D. Jakes.

A lifetime member of the Chance for Life Program in Detroit, MI, Brent gets great fulfillment out of mentoring and giving words of encouragement to anyone who needs positive energy. Brent is happily married to the love of his life, Mrs. Chantelle Jackson. They have a son, Tez, whom they are very proud of. Brent is excited about the launch of D.Y.M.O.N.D Sentiments. This devoted family man enjoys playing Chess, riding jet skis, playing pool, watching sports and travelling to new places.

Purpose Pusher: The Late Sharon Tolbert

There are people in life who find their gift and they use it. Most people flow in their gift so naturally, that they don’t even realize what a huge gift it is. Some people are gifted to be purpose pushers.

Purpose pushers are people who speak life into others. They see potential in others and encourage to maximize their talents and abilities. Purpose pushers sow into lives of dreamers and remind them that they are to be great.

The world recently lost the physical presence of a very special purpose pusher: Sharon Tolbert. She taught at Boynton Middle School in SW Detroit for many years. She impacted literally, thousands of lives. As a testament to the mark she made on this earth, many students came back and shared in memoriam, how Ms. Tolbert changed and even saved their lives.

I watched her as a wife and saw how happy her husband was. I knew it had a lot to do with who and how she was. I gleaned from her so that I can be a great wife too. I saw the light in her eyes when she spoke of her children and felt the glow of a mother’s pride. She made want to be a better mother. Although she was not my school teacher, she taught me a lot in a brief period of time. She taught me how to love, support, be positive and use my faith.

When I had the bookstore, It Is Written, she periodically came in on Fridays after teaching all week. She never spent less than $100. I don’t know if she really needed the things she purchased. She always found something to buy. I really believe she did it so she could support me and my dream. She often stayed and shared encouraging words.

This past summer she shared a written proclamation with me entitled: “I Am Set on High.” This piece was so inspiring, it made me feel like I could accomplish anything. I retyped it and posted it at home and at my workplace. When I read it, I feel empowered.

We had no idea that she would soon be leaving this place. Even though I am terribly saddened by the loss of her physical presence, I am thankful for what she left me with. The treasure of words she shared that I can keep with me. She sowed into my life and into the lives of countless others. Her legacy is enormous and many of the thousands of success stories connected to her may never be told publicly.

I am thankful for the opportunity to share my small story. I share it in hopes that you will be inspired to glean from your purpose pushers. I also want you to know that you too are a purpose pusher and you flow in your gift many times without even realizing what a blessing you are and how you are changing and saving lives, a lot like Sharon Tolbert did for so many of us.

She opens her mouth with wisdom…” (Proverb 31:26a)

Evangelist Latonya D. Sutton

“Never judge a book by its cover, you just may miss the treasure within its pages.”

Evangelist LaTonya D. Sutton has a natural ability to cause a peace and assurance to come over those she speaks to. When you read something she has written you get the strong feeling that she has been peeping into your thoughts and struggles. The insight this woman has makes her connection to the Holy Spirit of God undeniable. Born with Cerebral Palsy, no one knew quite what to expect of her life. She was introduced to challenges and obstacles at her very first breath. Born prematurely, Evangelist LaTonya was given just 10 days to live. Fast forward nearly a half a century later and see what a miracles looks like as LaTonya continues to not only live, but thrive and take on new challenges daily as her assignment continues to expand.

I dare you to try to imagine what more than 46 years of living with Cerebral Palsy has been like for Evangelist LaTonya. Not only the physical challenges and limitations that were placed on her, but also the spiritual and emotional struggles that come with it. She is evidence that there is a grace that comes only from God. When nothing is expected to become of you and then God shows out through you and causes you to bloom and flourish.

Evangelist LaTonya’s life has been a daily testament and display of God’s precious glory, mercy and strength. She continues to defy every odd placed before her. The River Rouge native graduated from River Rouge High School and went on to successfully attend the prestigious University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, Michigan where this academic achiever successfully studied English and African-American Studies.

Evangelist LaTonya recently received a Certificate of License for Ministry/Evangelism. She is a contributing writer in several publications and is currently working on the completion of her first published book, “Letters To My Angels: 100 Days of Love, Inspiration and Encouragement Vol. 1.” Evangelist hopes to become a Best Selling Author and a sought after Motivational Speaker like her idol Les Brown, whose work she admires and hopes to glean from. She has created a large and faithful following with her daily inspirational posts on Social Media. Many have come to look to her voice as one of comfort, strength and hope. The voice God has given her has proven to be powerful and life changing.

Marked by God from birth, being pulled from the jaws of death, Evangelist LaTonya describes God as her ‘best friend.’ While she has accomplished some amazing feats, her highest honor and most cherished accomplishment is giving birth to a beautiful son after being told that she would never have children. In spite of having Cerebral Palsy, Evangelist LaTonya was raised to be independent. She was thrust into adulthood and being on her own when she lost her beloved grandmother at age 18. God remained faithful to provide the support she needed, including the love and support of her dear aunt, Apostle Londen Winters of Londen Winters Ministries.

Evangelist LaTonya is interested in volunteering with charitable organizations. Like many with brilliant minds that crave a challenge, she enjoys doing crossword, word search and jigsaw puzzles. She is an avid reader, journaler, prayer warrior and plays computer games with her son.

This lover of vibrant colors, particularly, the color red, loves to dance! Within this woman lies the ferocity of a lioness who is courageous, protective and stronger than one could imagine. Evangelist LaTonya has an affinity for abstract art, which speaks volumes. “The more abstract, the better,” she says. Abstract art attracts the curious and the creative mind. It allows room for interpretation and it doesn’t box viewers in to seeing something one way. It is fluid and adaptable.

Evangelist LaTonya loves hearing people’s varying perceptions and views of what they see. Horrified at the notion of an undertaking so huge like ministry, Evangelist LaTonya submitted to the call of God to minister to souls for Christ. She stands as a representative of God with great integrity, a role she sees as a serious responsibility that is also extremely rewarding.

Once hidden in plain sight, like Queen Esther, Evangelist LaTonya is being called out to save her people. As she constantly discovers new aspects of herself, she stretches and reaches out to minister to God’s people one soul at a time.

Author Karen Duffie

When I began to read her book, I immediately began to empathize with her unimaginable pain. She tells the story of her son’s brutal murder and the impact it had on her world. It pierced me. It changed me. I was amazed by her tenacity and strength. I knew it had to be the grace of God. It’s a love story. It’s a pain story. It’s a story of her survival and helping people understand the kind of pain and anger that is unimaginable. She opens our hearts to it. She makes us look at it. When you read, you cry with her and hurt with her. You also celebrate with her because she is using the experience to not only empower lives, but to bring deeper understanding to people that she never imagined reaching. The writer of this book is Karen Lynne Duffie.

Karen’s raw and unadulterated verbiage makes her first book, "Life Interrupted," extremely powerful. It speaks to the heart and allows us to feel deep pain. It is also a testament to how despite our deepest pain, if we dig deep enough, we will find strength to change the world by turning tragedy into something meaningful and everlasting. "Life Interrupted" is a tribute to Karen’s late son, Kourtney E. Duffie. The world will know who he is.

Since the book was published, Karen has done numerous speaking engagements at libraries, prisons and anti-violence gatherings. She has appeared on radio programs, television talk shows addressing grief and loss issues and much more. Karen continues to get called upon to share her insight. The River Rouge High School graduate now volunteers at the Mound Road prison where she sits on a various committees chaired by inmates and focuses on victim sensitivity. She is currently employed by the Juvenile Justice System. Her work with the prisoners has inspired a second book called "Perspective."

Karen desired to look deeper into violence and why people commit violent crimes. With "Perspective," Karen hopes to open our eyes and bring awareness of why people commit violent crimes. This devoted mother does not want to evoke anger or sadness, but she wants to give us an objective look into the minds of those who have committed murder. Karen also wants to create a platform in "Perspective" for parents of murdered children to share their stories, discuss how they feel about murder, and how they cope. "Writing ‘Life Interrupted’ has helped me in so many ways," says the devoted mother. "I feel a deep level of satisfaction knowing that "Life Interrupted" has helped so many.

I love the feedback and not from a standpoint of self glorification but a real deep place inside that knows I'm pleasing to The Lord first by at least trying to help another human being!" Karen Duffie Karen shared a quote that her beloved Kourtney would often utter, "no one cares!" Kourtney would be so proud that his mom is changing that sentiment. Karen is causing people to care because she has the courage and audacity to share her painful story.

She is turning her tragic story into something immensely powerful and healing. Karen is changing the world and Kourtney’s voice will continue to be heard for generations. William Earl Amis

What do you think of when you think of a soldier? I think of a warrior or fighter. I think of courage, commitment and conviction. What do you think when you hear the term: Buffalo Soldier?

Those who know history, know. Our younger generation may not be so familiar with the term and what it means to the history of our nation. Buffalo Soldier is a term used for African-American cavalrymen.

From 1776-1781, Congress agreed to enlist colored men into the armed services. They let them serve, but they were segregated. At the time, to many blacks, the Buffalo Soldiers were a a symbol of hope for a better future.

Buffalo Soldiers protected the American frontier from the American Revolution through the Indian Wars. They also served in the Spanish-American War, Mexican Expedition, the Cuban Crisis, Philippine insurrection, both World Wars, and the Korean Conflict. They trained officers at West Point. They built frontier forts, constructed telegraph lines, patrolled the Mexican border and captured thieves and outlaw gangs. The last chapter ended with World War II and were never formally recognized until 1992 when a bronze statue was erected in Kansas, commissioned by General Colin Powell.

We are happy to honor a legendary, actual and factual Buffalo Soldier: Mr. William Amis Sr. (Leatherneck 2). He is affectionately called the happiest man in the world. He was born March 22, 1936 in Boston, Massachusetts.

After high school, Bill, as he is well known, spent 21 years active duty in the Marine Corp. and 8 years in the Fleet Marine Force. During his years in the Marines he had a variety of MOS jobs including Aviation Mechanic, combat Engineer and more. He was also selected to join the Mounted Color Guard, he was the first black marine to hold the position.

Bill has traveled around the world. He retired in 1974, moved to Michigan, he worked with Inkster Police Department and the Inkster Schools System. In 1983 he married Ann Rooks. In 1986, Bill retired from Inkster, joined the Federal Police Department (DOD). This job enabled him to meet many high profile people. He was the oldest person in the country to be on the Swat Team.

In 2002, Bill retired from the government. In 2003, he road to Atlanta with a group of bikers, saw the Buffalo Soldiers from Chicago and this group impressed him. He began to do his research. Contacted Dream Maker and the ball started to roll. By the end of the year Bill had everything in order. He met with two friends, Gordon (G-Man) and Farra (Brown Sugar) Mattingly to let them know he was going to organize a Buffalo Soldiers’ Chapter in Michigan.

In February 2004, the group traveled to Houston, Texas to meet with the National members of the Buffalo Soldiers’ Club. Bill was accepted into the club. After leaving Texas, Bill, Ann, Gordon and Farra begin working on By-laws and forming a Charter. He contacted four guys that had bikes and love riding. They were Calvin (Honey Bear) Smith, Lee (Black Hawk) Crump, Billy (Choctaw Bill) Lewis and James So - Sweet) Malone. Each man brought their wives to form a club. These men were his Charter Members.

The first meeting was held on Sunday, April 4, 2004 in Bill’s home. Bill, along with his members have done great things for the community, churches, hospitals, schools and nursing homes. During the month of February, Bill spends time speaking to children and adults, telling the history of the Buffalo Soldiers. Each year the club has given scholarship to high school graduates. Schools were adopted and gifts given out to children.

Bill helped organize chapters in Canada, Kansas, Ohio and Flint, Michigan. Being a part of the Buffalo Soldiers has being the highlight of his life. In November, 2010, Bill step down from president. Michael Varner, (Sledge) who became the president of the Michigan Buffalo Soldiers.

Bill lives in Oak Park, Michigan with his wife. He has three children and five grandchildren. He and Ann look forward to traveling and passing on the history of the Buffalo Soldiers.

Reverend Arnita Traylor

Church's First Female Pastor is BIG on Recognition, Reading and Reconnection

St. John African Methodist Episcopal Church on Beechwood Street in River Rouge MI is ‘The place to be all that God wants you to be.’ During a recent conversation with the pastor, Rev. Arnita Traylor, these three Rs were the common thread.  The Pastor,  Reverend Arnita Traylor, is a dynamic woman with a passion for God, service and the community. She is huge on the three Rs: RECOGNITION, READING & RECONNECTION.

Rev. Traylor, who accepted her call into ministry in 1993, is the first woman pastor since the church’s founding. She was assigned to St. John AME in 2015, its 99th year. The church just celebrated its 102nd anniversary on November 17, this year. St John AME is, undoubtedly, a long standing staple in the community. As its leader, Rev. Traylor is committed to reigniting ministry and outreach. Rev. Traylor brings a wealth of experience and a vast background in ministry, leadership and development, domestically and abroad (Canada). She continues to serve on several boards while maintaining numerous affiliations.

RECOGNITION

"There are many incredible persons who go without recognition for the love they so freely give," says Pastor Traylor.  This philosophy and commitment was demonstrated recently during a Recognition Awards Banquet held at the more than a century old church on October 26, 2019.

Honorees included: Tyrone A. Carter (Hon. MI State Representative), Rev. Marvin N. Miles (Pastor of International Gospel Center in Ecorse, MI), Sallie Smith Brown (CEO of Assured Family Services), Earl Folks (Rollercade Roller Rink). This event is one of many where Rev. Traylor and St. John AME want to recognize Heroes and Sheroes who impact lives, instill hope, and heal hurts. Rev. Traylor wants to extend gratitude by recognizing them with hopes that others will be inspired.

READING

Founded by former and late Pastor, Rev. John P. Henning, Rev. Traylor plans to reintroduce St. John AME’s Reading Room. This program is aimed at promoting literacy in the community. The Reading Room is a place where members of the church and community can come to learn to read, hone reading skills, or just to read and learn. Rev. Traylor welcomes donations of gently used books or new books for the Reading Room. For information on how to donate or participate, please contact the church about the Reading Room.

RECONNECTION

Rev. Traylor recognizes how critically important the church and community relationship is. The community needs the church and the church needs the community. This generation appears to be less connected to church than previous generations. This needs to change. “We want to reconnect, re-ignite and empower the community,” Says Pastor Traylor.

As a longstanding staple in the community, St. John AME would like to mobilize the younger population of the community and draw them to join and revitalize membership. This is key to help increase financial support for sustenance and viability of the church so that it can not only survive, but thrive and continue to create more programs that support the community and its members.

It’s a movement. Be a part of it. RECOGNITION. READING. RECONNECTION. For information and service times, please contact the church

"The Place To Be All God Wants You To Be!"

Chemeka Bristol

Some people are born with innate passion that drives them to go above and beyond to in all they do. It is called it a Spirit of Excellence! This characteristic describes Chemeka Bristol!

Chemeka Bristol got off to a challenging start, but you would never know it by looking at her as she radiates confidence and success. Surviving many aspects of abuse as a child, Chemeka became a remarkable overcomer at a young age. Practically raising herself, she encountered angels along the way who helped her to grow into an amazing woman as she continues to overcome obstacles with amazing grace!

As a teen, Chemeka left her home state to live with relatives and get a new start after enduring a painful childhood. While there, she began helping to care for a family member. This is when her generous nurturing and caregiving heart was awakened. She had discovered her element where she felt purpose in caregiving.

Forced to grow up quickly, Chemeka helped raise some of her siblings and became mom to three beautiful daughters. She later finished high school, proudly receiving a GED desiring to be a great example for her children and family. After being accepted into a prestigious nursing program, Chemeka later decided to change her studies to Social Work because she was so deeply moved by the social needs of the patients she encountered. Her heart wanted to help in a way that was beyond physical patient care.

Chemeka has an Associate’s Degree in Social Work and is close to earning her Bachelor’s (BSW). She earned her Pharmacy Technician Certification and has worked as a Certified Nursing Aid (CNA) for nearly 20 years. Chemeka is currently works as a Tester for a manufacturing company where she inspects products to insure that they meet the company’s quality standards. This skill translates into her life as it has developed her eye for high quality and ability to help individuals reach higher to become the best version of themselves. As a part time retail associate at Ross, Chemeka is sought after to help women look their best with her eye for style.

As if that were not enough, this busy grandmother of three young children is also a successful entrepreneur who runs a home based business called Faizah Morowa Wraps. Through this business, Chemeka is “Empowering the Victorious Queen One Wrap at a Time!” Taken from the Swahili language, Faizah means victorious and Morowa means queen. She uses this business to encourage, empower, and educate women and girls on the cultural significance of head wraps, even down to the nature of the fabric and colors used. She teaches women how to properly apply the wraps and helps them to look and feel beautiful.

Chemeka was led to this achievement driven enterprise by her research as she longed to know more about her African and Jamaican heritage. In her quest for more knowledge, the avid reader and researcher discovered information that helped her to appreciate the beauty of her culture and self and is helping others to embrace and be empowered by it as well.

As a mentor, Chemeka’s driving purpose is to use the pain of past abuse and struggles with self esteem to empower minority teens to have the confidence and self esteem that she often lacked growing up. She is the figure of light and child advocate that she longed to have during dark times of her youth. Her goal is to keep youth from experiencing the despair that she did. One of Chemeka’s earth angels was a social worker, who came along her path and helped her to reach higher ground. This sparked her interest in Social Work. The girl who was rescued has become a woman who rescues others.

Chemeka extends her helping hand and heart to others through her mentoring work with Gospel Village, an affiliate of the Boys and Girls Club of America and the East Texas Crisis Center. Her ultimate goal is to begin her very own Non Profit Organization that supports minority troubled teens by advocating self care, strength, confidence, and self love.

Chemeka is a proud and active member of the Queenish Professional Women’s Club which empowers women in all aspect of successful living through education, community events and networking.

Fond of elephants since childhood, Chemeka has an extensive collection. Drawn to elephants because of their ability to form deep family bonds, this resonates with Chemeka’s love of close family and people. Elephants are also known to be bold, sociable and curious, other traits the she identifies with. Also drawn to the color green, which represents life, nature, energy, growth, harmony, freshness, safety, environment, finances and ambition, this too is a reflection of Chemeka’s amazing character.

Once withdrawn, Chemeka has emerged as a beautiful butterfly full of light and love. Through forgiveness and acceptance of self and self care, she has renewed her life. She never meets a stranger because even those she encounters for the first time feels as though they know her because of her kindred and genuinely loving spirit.

A little known fact about Chemeka is that if given the opportunity, she might have become a great Badminton champion. At high levels of play, this technical sport demands excellent fitness, aerobic stamina, agility, strength, and precision. It is with this same passion and fervor that Chemeka Bristol applies in her daily tasks and goals while caring for her family, her loved ones, her work and all of those she sets out to help.  This is Chemeka Bristol, a woman on the rise who lifts others along the way.

Yvonne Hill: A Real Wonder Woman

Yvonne Hill played a unique role in many lives. There is nothing anyone can write or say that would capture all that Yvonne means to us. She was larger than life and her essence cannot be contained like that. I cannot say she was out of the box, because there was no box for her. She was free flowing, like fluid, and she left beautiful droplets of herself on us. We treasure and carry that with us. It's what will comfort us when we think of her. I actually saw her face when I looked at her son Terrell today. His smile was her smile. It was so bright, I know he had no idea that his mom was shining brightly and clearly through him. That comforted me. I am excited to watch Tierra flourish and carry her mother's legacy!!

Hearing all the stories about her reminded me how multifaceted she was and how so many of us got a glimpse of her from so many different perspectives and experiences. Like I said, I cannot capture Yvonne's essence in words, but here is my small attempt. And I can't believe I forgot to mention her popsicle ministry!! She loved giving things to the kids on her block and she was known for that. And Tierra told me how she took one of the little girls to the movies and that meant the world to that little girl. It becomes very clear why she was so loved by so many, but I hope you get the picture. Our Beloved Yvonne!! I know your voice will continue to echo in our hearts and minds for all of our days here.

In the Bible, the book of James, in chapter 3, it talks about some small objects that make a huge impact. Verse 3 it speaks of a small bit in a horse's mouth that guides his every move. Verse 4 talks about a rudder, which is a small device that controls the direction of a large ship. Similarly, in verse 5, we read how the human tongue, being small in size, boasts of great things and how a small flame can set a great forest on fire.

In life, we come across people who are small in stature, but have a humongous impact on the world. I was blessed to call her my personal friend. This mother of two lovely young adult children, blessed more people than she ever realized. Some nicknamed her 'Praise Leader,' because that's just what she was. She was an encourager, an inspiration and she had the sweetest way of 'telling you like it is.'

I can't think of many others in this world who could correct me, check me and direct me like she did. I could not get mad or disagree, because I always knew she was right and I knew she operated in the purest sweetest love and integrity.

Yvonne overcame many obstacles and achieved great success in many areas. Several years ago, she courageously returned to Detroit to finish raising her two children. She reunited with family and friends and made a lot of brand new friends. She had a heart for abused women, so she founded a ministry that she called, "Ladies of Faith." This group met monthly in her home where she poured into women and empowered them.

She had a love for God that bubbled over so tremendously, it could not be mistaken for anything else but love and adoration for her God. She wanted the world to know and she wanted everyone to experience this amazing love she had found in her daddy, the Lord.

As a result, Yvonne had been licensed as a minister by her Pastor at Union Second Baptist Church. She also completed studies at the GMMW Institute for Women in the Ministry.

Yvonne was never without and encouraging word or words of wisdom. From her, I learned a new meaning for friendship. Her generosity, supportive nature and commitment was amazing. Her kindness was angelic. Not only did I experience it, but everyone she encountered and interacted with experienced it as well.

The City of River Rouge has lost a gem, but those who came in contact with Yvonne gained tremendous insight on what a selfless humanitarian is like. They are the rare ones. She was like a modern day Mother Theresa in her very own way. She made a difference in the world that will continue to be felt for eternity. She changed lives. She showed us God. She showed us love and wanted the best for everyone she knew, especially her children, Tierra and Terrell, her pride and joy.

Please remember Tierra and Terrell when you pray. Also, remember Yvonne's relative's and friends, and everyone she touched. I remember. I honor. I celebrate her life. She changed me and so many others for the better and I am eternally grateful. She is a blueprint for how to be a strong woman. Yvonne was small in size, but she was, no, she IS, larger than life!! She is a won der. A true wonder woman. Truly, signs and wonders followed her in life. Yvonne Hill departed this life on Saturday afternoon, June 6, 2015.

Treva Gordon

Growing up on Frazier Street in River Rouge, MI, a beautiful, quiet, sweet little girl had passion brewing inside her. She was my classmate and friend from preschool through 12th grade at River Rouge High School . She grew up as Treva Sanders. Shortly after high school, Treva left to join the U.S. Army. Shortly thereafter, Treva lost her mom, Ms. Joan. Ms. Joan had been a loving presence in our preschool classroom and the loss was a shock. Nevertheless, Treva forged ahead. She continued to live and pursue a better life. Little did we know, a miracle and a star were in the making.

She married Robert and became Treva Sanders-Gordon and settled in Tennessee . We knew Treva was busy starting and raising a family. Quietly, she peeled away her shell. She came out quietly, tiptoeing into the spotlight. Her arrival says, “ BOOM !” and today, she is kicking down doors! God has empowered her to claim new territory!

She started her own magazine and is the publisher. It is called Convenient Shopper Magazine. Her involvement with the magazine connected her with the community. She placed her finger on its pulse and recognized needs and immediately began filling them. Evangelist Treva did not stop at just being the CEO /President of CCS Publications.

Treva is a motivational speaker, Playwright, Actress, Singer, Songwriter, Radio/TV Host and so much more.  Her most recent accomplishment is the release of her new single, “Devil You’s A Lie.” Treva wrote this song herself. Her debut single features Justin J- RAD Radford. It is her God-inspired song written several months ago. The music video, directed by Anthony Taylor, can be viewed at www.youtube.com. The song stems from her personal testimony after giving birth to her daughter Robyn in 2004. Treva experienced major complications after giving birth and nearly died. Her miraculous survival inspired her new single.

“I am healed. Yes my friend, the Devil is a liar. I chose to believe the report of the Lord. God allowed me to live,” Treva testifies. She wants the world to know of God’s power and she is singing about it!

Mrs. Gordon’s creativity is paramount. Her enthusiasm is contagious. Love runs over through her radiant personality. She is as real and humble as they come. She is the definition of a ‘go getter.’ Her determination is an inspiration to us all, especially African American women facing many odds. Treva reminds us that we can do all things through Christ, our Strength.

With the love and support of a wonderful husband and beautiful children, she proves that life starts again at 40. It’s never too late to pursue your dreams. Treva is a proud native of River Rouge, Michigan who currently lives in Tennessee with her husband Robert. Together they have 3 amazing children.

Keven C. Kennedy

God sends amazing people into our lives to be a blessing to us, support us, inspire us, teach us and cheer us on as we move forward into destiny. God has done this for many of us and I am amazed at how He has done it for Treva in Tennessee! Although she is not a native of that state, she has been received with open arms by some very prominent people with diverse backgrounds. Treva’s vision is contagious and many have caught it in TN. Our next Magnificent Man is one of them. He is also a God-fearing humanitarian who cares about justice and the welfare of all people.

Based on the information I’ve gathered, I would say this Magnificent Man is sort of like the Jeffrey Fieger of Tennessee. He is Kevin C. Kennedy, a prominent attorney in civil and criminal practice, both on the state and federal level in Montgomery County in TN.

He graduated with honors from Austin Peay State U and now owns the Kennedy Law Firm. He has been a Professor of law at colleges and has served as Dean of Legal Studies at Draugns Junior College as well as Bowling Green in Kentucky.

After the Persian Gulf War, also known as Operation Desert Storm, Kennedy was invited to appear on the Oprah Winfrey Show where he shared his knowledge on wartime divorces. During this same time, he was interviewed by the Washington Post, New York Times and CNN to share his expertise. Kennedy designed and uses a replica of a courtroom in the rear of his office to teach by using a full-scale simulated court, complete with bench, bar, jury panel, counsel tables, judge’s chamber, jury deliberation room, inmate holding room and spectator seating to teach students how the court system works. Local schools use the facility for training with mock trials. It is called: The Court of Creativity and it housed Montgomery County’s first Teen Court.

Kennedy owns the Kennedy Walking Horse Farm which has been in his family for over 109 years. He is published author of the book How to Make Money in the Tennessee Walking Horse Business, which sold nationwide. Kennedy was named the 2004 volunteer of the year by the Ed Atkins Foundation for Clarksvillians, named William O. Beach Montgomery County Citizen of the Year and City of Clarksville Citizen of the Year both in 2008, serves on the Austin Peay State University Foundation, is a member of the Governor’s Club, and is a member of First Baptist Church of Clarksville where he teaches Sunday School and is a Deacon.

The Late Steve Sanders

You can tell a lot about a man by the way his family feels about him. When he is adored by his family, his children and grandchildren, then you know he has lived with love and he is consistently committed to them. Mr. Sanders has this. He celebrates his daughter, nurtures her dreams and supports all the good things she does. Last year, Mr. Sanders could be seen throughout the neighborhood passing out flyers on foot to promote his daughter’s event, Michigan Leading Ladies! He even flies to Tennessee periodically to assist Treva and her husband with their business and their children. Now that’s a supportive dad! It is wonderful to have a man in your life who you know will do anything for you.

Treva and her three sisters all have that in their father Steve. A lifelong resident of River Rouge, Steve Sanders continues to be a staple in the community. Known to many as "Uncle Stevo", the 1964 graduate of River Rouge High School was a star basketball player and continues to be a beloved example to others. Steve is a member of Triumph Church where Pastor S. W. Kinloch is his pastor. He serves on the usher board ministry and is a greeter. Mr. Sanders worked for the Chrysler Corporation for 30 years and 6 months where he retired. He is a community helper. He assists with community work and by setting a standard within his neighborhood. He also works the youth and serves as a mentor to those who know him.

For many years, he has volunteered his time working also with the elderly. Mr. Sanders is a motivator with his "tell it like it is" truths that have helped others get on the right path. We are proud to honor him as a community hero.

Robin Bossio

It takes a special gift to be able to usher people into God’s presence. It takes a special connection to bridge the gap between our spirit and God’s spirit. A great worship leader cultivate

s the atmosphere for worship and prepares the hearts of God’s people to receive His Word. This woman has a level of intimacy with God and is in tuned with God on a level that a select few can attain without assistance. She has a gift. Simply reading her bio made tears fall profusely from my eyes. I felt the presence of God just from reading her sincere words. She was appointed to lead God’s people into worship from the time of her conception. Shortly after accepting Jesus as her personal savior, at age 11, God put the desire in her to play music.

She began playing guitar when she was 12. She became the worship leader of her four younger siblings in their home. Under her young leadership, they became known as the Stone Family or Stone Kids and they performed on their church’s weekly radio and television programs. She came to Michigan at age 17 and began ministering with a local gospel singing group. Her dream of playing piano came true when a piano was donated to her family.

Influence by gospel greats like Andra Crouch, Keith Green, By age 19, she became the pianist and psalmist for Sunday evening services. She is Lady Robin Bossio, first lady of Faith Assembly Church in Melvindale. Her co-laborer and soul-mate is Pastor Pat Bossio. Their church, Christ Family, is located in Brownstown, MI.

The Late Apostle Minetta Hare

Business and Travel

It was around 1997 during Women’s Day weekend at Union Second Baptist Church in River Rouge. On a Saturday morning, there were workshops. I was captivated and impressed by the words of one workshop presenter.

As she spoke to my heart, I remember realizing: “This is what I want to do. I want to speak to people and touch their hearts; empower and change lives.” It was the moment I knew what I was supposed to do.

Fast forward about ten years to 2007. I had written an article in the Michigan Front Page. The workshop speaker who had changed my life sent me an email. She had no idea I was in the workshop audience that day. Her email was a response to the article I had written. She invited me to come and speak to her group of women in ministry and business: The Lydia Circle.

This is an amazing example to me of how God connects His people for His purpose. We cross paths and God redirects our paths to cause us to cross paths with those who are connected to our destiny. I am happy to be connected to this MICHIGAN LEADING LADY. She is Apostle Minetta Hare!

She is a globetrotter. She is my mentor; a mentor and inspiration to many men and women.  She is called to Make a Difference in Lives around the World. Dedicated and committed with great passion to purpose in life. She preaches the Kingdom of God, teaching Christ.

Hare is a Business Coach, International Business Consultant, Business Columnist and Ordained Minister, Entrepreneur, Author, International Speaker, Trainer, Radio and TV Host, Leadership Minetta is Adventurous, Compassionate and Generous.

Hare is CEO and President of Global Solutions and Innovative Consulting: Business Development, consulting and management, exports, imports and financing, marketing and public relations and financial management.  She is the Founder and CEO of the Lydia Circle of Christian Business Women, an international networking organization of Christian business and professional women and sister’s keeper mentoring for young adults and teens.

She is President and CEO of the Hare Group International LLC. Trade mission to Ghana, Africa, Israel. Personal development and seminars, training and coaching. This Seminarian wears multiple hats. She wears extremely large hats, I might add, and she wears them all exceptionally well.  There is a lot we can glean from this Woman of God. At a recent Lydia Circle breakfast gathering, she reminded us that 'it takes as much energy to do it BIG as it does to do it small, so why not do it BIG?'

Reference and Character Reference Letters

October 22, 20XX

To Whom It May Concern, It is my pleasure and honor to provide a character reference for Mr. OD. I have known Mr. OD for more than 40 years. I have always known him to be kind, considerate and respectful. Growing up, I watched him play sports, specifically basketball and baseball, always displaying excellent sportsmanship. He has also been a skilled roller skater as well.

OD has always been active in the community and is fondly recognized by lifelong as well as new residents of the community. As an adult, I am very proud to see the importance and value Mr. OD places on recreation in the community. He pays it forward daily by investing time and pouring into youth in Southwest Detroit by coaching, teaching and imparting wisdom. Mr. OD has also been very instrumental over the years helping my family with their local business, Rollercade Roller Rink by assisting when needed.

Mr. OD is truly an asset to the community and comes highly recommended. I wish there were more like him. OD adds value to any team or endeavor he is a part of. The height and depth of his commitment, integrity, character, and values are a rare find today.

To Whom it May Concern:

I have known TP since she was born. I knew her father, I know her mother and graduated with her older sister. We are from the same city, River Rouge, MI, where her family was known as pillars of the community and loved in the neighborhood.

I watched TP grow up and I was so proud of her when she began to work at River Rouge High School and work with the neighborhood youth. I was impressed with TP as an ambitious young entrepreneur defying the odds. Her creativity and drive was unlike anything I had seen in such a young woman. I watched her design items and sell them. Then she started her entertainment company with Ms. Spriggles, entertaining at children’s birthday parties. My family’s business often employed her services.

As if that wasn’t outstanding enough, TP began to organize and sponsor an annual back to school rally where she collected and gave away school supplies, haircuts and more to children in the community for free. I was amazed by the large turnout and huge support TP gathered for this annual event. I have never seen anyone from our neighborhood accomplish so much at such a young age.

TP is a great example of one who gives back to the community and being a trailblazer within the neighborhood. TP is loved by her family and friends, as well as children in the community whom she has helped and been a blessing to. Not to mention, I’ve watched TP function as an amazing mother and leader in her family. She plays an important and constructive role in many lives.

If you have any questions, please feel free to reach me by phone or email.

Sincerely,

Janine Folks
